Wiring two EGT sensors for Big twins setup

Post by markssupra »

Hi all,
I am building a HKS big twins setup and my manifold has a fitting for an EGT sensor next to each turbo flange.
How do I connect two sensors to the S6 if there is only one input for a K type thermocoupler?

Thanks
Mark

You either don't, and swap around the EGTs every now and again to see what's going on, or you need to use an external EGT amplifier that converts the EGT output to a 0-5V range that you can they connect up on a spare input.

Thanks Tim, something like this 2 channel amp? Or a single channel amp for the second EGTsensor?

Sorry, might be a dumb question as I'm very green to all this :)

Yes, that sort of thing. No need for a dual channel unless you want to run *3* EGTs :) The built-in one is fine, so you only need amplifiers for additional probes.

Ahh Ok, I see, sort of. What do you mean by the built in one? Do I only need a single amp then to convert the probe to work on a spare input and run the second probe through the EGT standard input?

Thankyou :)

One more question, on that website it says about using a compensated connector. Can I use standard syvecs EGT probes with that amp and how do they connect to the syvecs? Standard stripped leads that I have to solder to the loom?

Any decent EGT probe has a "compensated" connector, meaning the materials used match the materials of the EGT probe wires, which then matches the materials in the socket on the amplifier. Ultimately, the materials change to copper and in an ideal world this is as close to the probe electronics as possible.

Not sure what standard Syvecs probes are as I don't think they do them...but we do, and they have the correct plug on them :)

As to how to connect an EGT probe:

- if it's a full "PnP" (Subaru, basically) S6 then it plugs straight in
- if it's a loom adapter made in the last 12 months or so it will have an EGT socket on a flying lead, and you plug straight in
- if you're making your own loom up, or it's an old loom adapter, then easiest is to remove the 2 pin plug and wire direct to the ECU connector using crimp terminals. The lack of compensation will not be of any consequence as the ECU pins are not "compensated".

OK cool Tim, I have a new loom adapter and IO expander on order from SRD.
I'll be in touch to order 2, what's your number?
