Syvecs to ICD & external card logger

Post by RICE RACING »

Hi I wanted to know if anyone has hooked up a Syvecs S8C to a Cosworth ICD over CAN to get the ECU stream of data?
Reason I ask is I would like to change my ECU from the MQ12 which I have sold to a Syvecs S8C (more suitable for my application).
I also have a DB1-RSHE card logger, is it possible to hook this up as well.

Thanks.

Peter,

I am not aware of anyone having used an S8C with a Cosworth ICD, the only product that I know of with certainty is the Cosworth / Pectel Differential Controller (because I did the integration work). Looking at the product promotional material suggests that, like a MoTeC ADL, the ICD is fully configurable, and if this is the case then it should be relatively "trivial" to get it to accept the "Custom CAN" telemetry stream on the CAN bus. If you load SCal and look in the Datastreams -> Custom CAN section you will find the configuration options for this datastream. You can configure up to 20 CAN frames, each with up to four parameters. For each frame you can define the transmission rate and the frame contents. When you select a runtime parameter from the list, it will tell you whether it is sent as a 16 bit signed or unsigned quantity and also the formula to convert the raw value into engineering units.

You would need to configure the ICD to receive the frames that you have defined (or the default ones if they cover what your need), together with the frame contents. The CAN bus is run at 1Mbit/sec for telemetry use and frames are sent with 8 data bytes, two bytes per 16 bit quantity send MSB first (big endian) but otherwise in sequence (ie slot 1 will be bytes 1 and 0). Note that a frame is sent every 500 microseconds and there is no prohibition on sending the same data and/or frame identifier more than once if you require certain parameters more frequently than you could otherwise achieve (eg when talking to a Zytek gear controller) - the most recent information available is sent so you do actually get updates you don't just get duplicate data.

With regard to the DB1-RSHE it is not a unit that I have ever had to configure, but if you can configure which frames to receive and what the contents of those frames should be (any universal logger should have this ability) then it should again just be a case of configuring it to match your datastream config.

If for some reason either (or neither) of your units can be confured to match the S8 datastream, and if the telemetry protocol expected by these units cannot be emulated by suitably configuring the flexible Custom CAN stream then it would still be possible with the use of a CAN bridge unit, however we would require a copy of the necessary telemetry protocol spec to be able to correctly translate between our datastream and Cosworth's implementation.

Sorry this isn't more specific but it should at least get you looking in the right direction. In short, yes it will be possible, it is only a question of how much effort will be necessary.

Cheers,

Pat.

Thanks Pat,

May have off loaded all of the Cosworth/Pi stuff so may not have to dig much deeper.

FINALLY got rid of all the Cosworth/Pi items!!!
so no need to go through with that, what a nightmare it was to deal with them  995 pounds per day to fix false advertising in their product sheet!

Just will get a whole system that works out of the box and dont need to pay through the nose and is supported with FREE updates too.

Welcome here. I must say Syvecs support is fantastic. But i think you'll need it quite rare. Personally i didn't have any problems ever. And everithing is working as it should work. I love it.

Yes Cosworth promised the world and delivered an Atlas.
This here at least I can get an item that does what it says it will on paper and I don't need to pay through the nose each time for a firmware upgrade, nor do I have to go through the yearly pain of a 'personality' upgrade, nor do I need to pay again to use the analysis tools either
