TinyDashv2 S7 CAN2 Set up

Post by Jackstrath »

Ok, so out my depth yet again!

I have a S7+ ECU, running the new dedicated DSG software, so this uses CAN1 for the gearbox control so nothing else can go on that CAN1 line.

I have a Plex SDM330 dash on CAN2 and it works as to be expected.
I have added the Tinydash onto CAN2.

I set it all up but when i select OEM/Predefined to S7 it doesnt work. As a test i set it to the s6 and actually got some data to the Tinydash but muddled up. Im going to assume as this isnt on CAN1 the message doesnt line up in the TD.
So from what i can see i have to set up the Generic CAN as im using CAN2 from the S7, But like i said i am in a bit over my head but wanting to learn.
I assume i have to match up the CAN Receive on the TD to the S7's Transmit? But this is my first sumbling block.

The S7 shows the transmit content as Frame with 4 slots in each frame, where the TD shows just 1 (slot or frame im not sure) - See pic 1

Iv lined the CAN Receive Identifier up so the S7 Transmit matchs the TD Receive but then unsure on how to set the CANRx04 for eop to match? Like how do you know what the identifier is supposed to be,bits ect ect?

Its maybe past my limits and if its more than just matching up the numbers then so be it, but i thought id ask here before going further!

How many items are on CAN2 now ? and does the Plex still display properly with the TD wired in ?

ie the data is being transmitted ok ?

I've never used the TD, so can't comment. I did consider it for my other car, but bought the Plex micro instead as it also has GPS/Accelerometers built in that I can feed back into the ecu.

Surely there is a generic CAN config for receive on the TD setup ? that should then match what is being sent ?

Just this and the dash, and yeh when i plug in the TD in the plex still reads as normal (well i can only confirm the coolant and oil temp readings as i cant start the car just now)

I bought this for the programmable buttons and cal switchs, so i can program the DSG drive modes to the buttons and have the cal switch on it as well - free'd up a few inputs on the ECU which was nice.

There is options for that but like iv attached in the photos it doesnt exactly line up like for like with what is being transmitted from the S7 which is where its loosing me!

Iv watched a few help videos on the syvecs youtube but they seem to be more tailored for 3rd party devices/OEM cars CAN

Maybe give Martin a shout, as RTFM.... he does know his stuff

For a few quid, I'm sure he could sort it.

I've just downloaded one of the base cal's for the TD...and it's over my head too. It does look kinda blank though.

ALthough looking at it again after reading Romain's comments

You can just select S7 fixed receive in the TD menu.

Have you done that, and copied and pasted the CAN transmit from CAN1 to CAN2 on the ecu ? and ensuring CAN receive speed is all matching etc ?

Yeh iv tried that, and it doesnt work,

Iv been in contact with martin, and he is currently on holiday but he basically said the output from the ECU isnt default S7 so thats why its not talking. He said that its going to have to be entered manually so gave me some things to try figure it out but if i dont get any further then he will hopefully sort it for me.

Isn't default S7 why ?

Because of the DSG ? Even if you copy and paste the default S7 output from CAN1 to CAN 2 from a non DSG cal ?

Im not sure in with what regard, i sent him the photos i attached in here and he noticed it right away, i said i copy'd the info over from the S6 that i first started this project on and he said it wasnt that ether? I did have a look through my thread see if i did anything or got anyone to mod it for me but i dont think i did, it just worked once i copyed CAN1 over to CAN2 and got the wires the right way around!

Ok, so had a dig through my emails and it turns out that the frame content was sent to me by PLEX, so that clears up why mine is like that.
No real issue imo as long as i can figure out how to set the TD to look for them in the right place.

As far as i can see the Receive index is populated correctly (although the value is 0000600h vs just 600h on the S7, does that matter?)
The Can speed is correct at 1mhrz
Iv set all the Receive start bit to 16
Is there a theory behind the frame vs slot? (attached photo)

So got it working!
Well the receive side is, still need to figure out the transmit for the Cal and Buttons but thats another nights job!
So, more i thought about it, i am wanting to potentially add the GPS unit in down the line and i have no idea if the plex style transmit content would affect it or not but it made me think maybe i change the PLEX dash to suit the syvecs, so did a bit of digging and to my surprise there was a CAN file for the s7 in the now discontinued manager software! So loaded that onto the plex, Pastecaled the S7 standard stream, the ecu didnt come online! Turns out there was 2 items that went to NOT_SET?? Changed them to spare and then config'd the TD to S7 and boom all works!
I can only guess as i was one of the early customers for the Plex dash's that they hadnt took the time to config the dash for syvecs seeing as you could just config the syvecs to match the dash... all good and well until you add more syvecs products on that can!
