The serial number of the ECU will allow us to check whether its one of the ECUs with no CANbus, but RS232 would still work.

If it's a poorly soldered connector (only seen it once, maybe twice; these things happen!) a visual inspection will show it. If I recall, the Impreza ECU case has to be cut to reveal the Ethernet and comms connector - if the case gets bent or the cutting isn't quite right, then the comms connector pins can get shorted to chassis; again, a visual inspection should show this.
