What ECU did you run before Syvecs? Should I buy one?

I'm currently researching what benefits the Syvecs and other modern/up to date ECU's offer over my current Omex 710.

I've been running an Omex since 2004.
There weren't exactly a plethora of stand alone choices when I ordered mine in December 2003 and I was all set to buy a Motec M800 but I went for the Omex700 after seeing a demo of it by Chris Todd who was, at the time working for Power Engineering. His tuning and extensive expertise/support were my deciding factor.

I've been very happy with the Omex (which was upgraded to the 710 version for free) but I now want some more advanced options.

My requirements:
Do everything that the Omex can do including running 6 sequential injectors and 6 individual coils (or 12 cylinders sequentially if available - the Omex can do this).
EASY and COMPREHENSIVE logging options available to be displayed ideally on an iPad (or similar) mounted in the car.
A full gauge display option that I can display/mount in the car, again ideally on an iPad.


The car:
Mitsubishi GTO 3.6L GT42RS
Currently 900 BHP but turned down to a conservative 800 BHP for Time Attack.
I'm expecting 1200 BHP when I fit my new headers, use NOS and 100% Race gas.











What ECU were you running before going to the Syvecs?

What have you found to be the most limiting factor on your Syvecs?

I've been a dealer with Haltech for many years. Also have experience with most of what I call hobby level systems; AEM, Adaptronic, Hydra, etc. As well as Motec. We just did our first Syvecs install on a purpose built race car that had been competing very successfully (two time defending national champion) on a Haltech Sport ECU. The owner was interested in traction control and, based on recommendations from trusted sources, the Syvecs looked like a good option. The owner also has plans to move to a sequential gearbox and DBW, so the Syvecs was a good one-box, motorsports level solution.

My impressions of the system are very positive. The only thing I would like to see is a comprehensive manual. But any questions I had that I couldn't find an answer for were quickly and concisely answered by the Syvecs staff. Great support! The system has worked as advertised and has really been a treat to work with.

I tell potential customers that my highest form of praise is usually to say that a system does everything the company says it will do. And Syvecs has delivered. Unfortunately, that seems to be the exception to the rule when it comes to many of the popular systems on the market.

I dont think there is even a realistic comparison between a Syvecs and Omex even if one claims to run 12 injectors. That's a relatively minor bonus overall.

In your case for the 12cyl, you'd need the S8 really. But for the Mitsubishi, depending on how many other features or how much logging you needed, the S6 would pretty much cover it as far as 6 cyl sequential goes, and be a good step to dip your toes in so to speak..

Their bluetooth module should cover a lot of aspects you want via ipad etc

As for limitations...other than myself the user of course, and Ive only used the S6, not the S8 so not sure if these comments follow through to the S8.

I too would like that user manual, but the more you use it the more you learn anyway. Manual's dont always go into the detail you really want anyway.
On the Helpside...F1 help feature with info at bottom of screen may yield some help info, sometimes it just reads too complicated, others it just says nothing.

I'd like some generic outputs. Almost all outputs are specifically assigned to a function. So if you want to do something that isnt specifically listed...well, you either have to work around using another function or you cant do it.
Water injection feature...seems to be more a water spray really, as there is no provision for mapping actual water ( + meth ) flow.

And more logging memory...
Also...live colour trace of cells just passed through would be nice too. But logging setup/use is excellent, so lack of trace is not such a big deal....would still be nice though.

But for the money, they really are superb, and the range of options available via the Cal switches is excellent too. I had thought so many options via an in-cab switch seemed overkill at first, but they really arent.

Positives...I like the simple screen layout and keyboard navigations. I hate systems that are all colourful and graphical and require lots of mouse use. That's fine sitting comfortably at a computer, not so fine using a laptop.
Logging can be downloaded anytime...I hate other ecu's where you have to shutdown the engine to download. And some downloads take ages. Syvecs is super fast.

The only thing I find frustrating is the lack of resolution on AD @ 10 bit v's 12bit for Pectel (SQ6 and MQ12) that I ran previously.
This limits the ability of the ECU to do accurate captures of certain sensors http://www.syvecs.co.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 6e617d5519

Apart from this pluses of the Life/Syvecs are many fold.
I highlighted these to many end users and shops about 4~5 years ago, lots of whom have followed my advise and started running these ECU's, every one who runs one of them loves the untis for the reasons others have posted here, they just work well and if you are not too anal about the logging at high accuracy then they win in every regard.

Positives over other ECU's (well only one you can compare it too is Pectel) all the others are just hyped up toys at the end of the day:
* No annual renewal of Personality profiles
* No pay for logging and annual update of access codes
* No pay for firmware updates
* Actually you have support through the factory or the distributor/dealers not just an office set up to deal with OEM high net worth/expenditure customers only
* Features are implemented that you want, and not for a Fee like some others!@

If the S8C/F88 had 12Bit AD it would be a perfect ECU, this is the only limit of it I have found as is.
I highly recommend them.
Software is great, value is great, support is great, product is very good value for money.

S8 has some nice strategies that don't always make it to the S6 - although, over time, many do. Main advantage of S8 is more inputs and outputs, but an I/O expander solves that, and still less than an S8 I think?

I/O Expander offers more I/O's but also eats into the CAN stream I presume ?

Not sure how that affects it's ability to talk to a dash for example ?

The new S6Plus is a midway between an S8 and S6, but price getting closer to an S8. It still doesnt have the extra logging memory though that an S8 would offer.

So it's almost like an S6 + an I/O expander, but if you did change or upgrade from an S6 you'd need to change ecu connectors too. So in that case the I/O expander might be the easier solution especially if you already have the S6

If you're starting from scratch or another ecu, IMO the S6Plus offers one good bonus in that they use the same connector type as most other ecu's now. eg same as Motec, Haltech, Link, ViPec, DTA etc etc
So for most part some re-arranging of pins would be all that's needed to get started if you had one of those ecu's. IMO that style of connected is also easier to work with anyway.


But for most, the S6 is more than capable, the only real issue is when you see what it can do, you just want everything lol

I forgot to say, just buy the S8C. I actually prefer the Bosch 88 way connector its much more robust than the AMP connectors and easier to route as well fwiw.

Something that was important to me:
If you are pedantic about the user interface of the software, you may prefer the Life Racing version? early days you could select themes on the Syvecs to the preferred black on white scheme, this is much more user friendly in the field being able to be read in direct sunlight, the black only now on the Syvecs is unreadable outside *something to consider* maybe? it was one of the major considerations for myself as am always outside reading datalogs and ECU calibration files and the normal black backgrounds are simply not readable. The other thing is if you spend many many hours infront of a screen the black on white is 10 fold easier on your eyes too.

Life Racing lets you select either.
Syvecs as differentiation ? got rid of that option and only do black background.
