Toucan, blank screen, permanently on.

Post by Chris Wilson »

Supra with S6 and a Toucan display. Was working fine, now has a permanently on blank backlit screen. Data cable is plugged into the flylead from the BMW connector on the Syvecs. What should I look for, it had a display before I read the ecu...... :( Does it need some sort of turning on, it's a customer car? Thanks. Oh, and of course the battery got very low, but not dead, just a very lazy crank. No boost starts, just a trickle charge overnight !

Sounds like it has "locked up". Remove the connecting cable from the back of Toucan, wait a few seconds, then re-attach.

If you look in the Toucan section of this forum here, you'll see I posted up about an issue with earlier units that can cause this - so you may want to get your unit back to me for a same-day fix and return.

Thanks Tim, hadn't seen that section, sorry. Would this glitch allow the thing to be on all the time though? I haven't looked to see if it is a split switched / permanent feed, but have to assume it wasn't originally on all the time with the ignition key out :). It is now..... Cheers, hope you are well?

That means it was wired in with a switched *and* permanent live, but the unit is not shutting down when the switched power is off...because the processor has crashed and doesn't read the pin that tells it to shut down. Actually...that's a note to myself as there should be a watchdog enabled to prevent this. Guess what I'll be looking at tomorrow lol.

Anyway - remove the power and re-apply as suggested and it should fix itself for now. Then, when it suits you, get the unit back to me and I can mod it for you.

OK. That's great info, I feared the worst and could foresee a mini drama unfolding. It'll have to stay on tonight as everywhere is locked up and shuttered. I'll inform the customer and act as instructed ;) Cheers Tim, fantastic service as always!

Just been having a look at the dash installation, and removing the Toucan to get to the connector is not at all trivial. Will disconnecting the car's battery for a few minutes do the same thing as removing the Toucan's connector plug? Thanks.

Forget this, I was loathe to remove all car battery power with no ICE power saver, but bit the bullet and the Toucan is now working fine again. I'll tell the customer it should have the upgrade to avoid future issues, cheers.
