Have you considered the Blue Tooth angle?

If we could get a bluetooth dongle to work with the Syvecs data stream output on serial I guess it could work :)

To be honest of the 17 items in the stack stream only 6 can be guaranteed, 4 are near useless and the others require additional sensors to be of any use. The can bus message stream is more verbose but contains little additional info that would be of worth to your average performance car driver (most of it based on the F88 so half of it doesn't even exist on the lower end Syvecs). However, in it's ability to be user configured the can does offer a way to increase the free internal info that would be of interest to the laymen. Obviously there are propeller heads out there who want to know the ins and outs of a dogs a-hole but most would settle for info they have at least heard of before.

I've been looking into CAN SPI modules that use the microchip MCP2515 as a base which offer a cheap interface to a micro controller, not that this will help you (unless I convert the packet stream to RS232 and mirror it on the TX output for you but this will then need a RS232 line level converter chip to be able to use the Apple Serial lead).

The other option could be a USB to CAN adapter.

Does the i-phone have a FTDI serial port simulation driver?

That could open it up to other platforms for you there, Wez. You could do iPhone, Android and Win7 phone.
The BT stack on the iPhone isn't the best implementation, though. Is it still doable?

Apple are starting to wind me up, you cannot access the BT unless its a signed MFI BT device, I guess this is why the new AEM wideband app uses WiFi :(
