sCal improvements/feature requests.

Post by dr_jones »

Having spent now a little time on the road within sCal I thought I'd note a few enhancements that I for one would really like to see...

1) - Fully resize-able gauges within sCal
- current gauges do not lend themselves well to live on road mapping within sCal - even in 'normal' size they are the small side and can be difficult to quickly read.
- Fix for text gauges not showing the the entire value - eg lam1 only fully displays 3 digits in text mode and whilst this is no doubt sufficient for most applications it *should* display the entire value.

2) - Live position indicator edit 'shadowing' - ie the ability to shadow the position of the live position indicator for editing within say base injection time or base ignition time. Again probably more of a live road mapping feature but would avoid the fiddling around with cursor keys before adjusting the value of the current position within the map or using the 'freeze' display ability via space bar as proposed in the manual.

3) - Math gauges - it'd be great to have a gauge that for instance displayed in real time the delta between say lam1 and clltarg1 - this could really improve the ability of the mapper to resolve those two values in real time.

3) fuelMltCll1 already exists and does a far better job than a simple comparison as others do. I think pat did already a really good explanation of this?

1) SMON is the gauge view application, lots of us use two screens with cal on one and monitor on the other, or even on a single screen you can 'alt' 'tab' between them easy as.

2) Is Option -> Toggle Live Lock (when viewing a map) not what you are after?

3) Agreed on this, it would be nice to have the ability to add some math to gauges, either in SCal or SMon.

Thanks chaps!

Thanks - I'm not sure - I'll have a look this evening.

Sorry and yes of course it does - that was a terrible example - but hopefully illustrates the point.

Yes and I did have a look at sMon but the ideal (at least for my case) is to minimize any additional keystrokes / screen swapping just to minimize distraction.

I never even use the gauges, well other than perhaps low load driving. For full power runs it's just impossible to see what's going on, other than just a glance because things happen so fast. It's not like you can watch them all properly. Do a pull, log it, review it. It only takes a few seconds and then you can study the pull in detail prior to making any adjustments.

If you are referring to a ghost trace type feature ? That will highlight all cells passed through ? It has been asked several times, going back an easy 6+ years. It still hasnt appeared. Why....who knows ? It is such a great feature with other ecus

And is that not just CLError ? And as Rice says, FuelMltCll tells you the percentage correction at any given time.

dr_jones, the monitor program does all you want now, it has maths, you can freely scale the window to open anywhere on the screen and size your gauges/graph traces, warnings to suit, then simply open the cal program and size that scree so you have both on your monitor at same time ;) *just an idea*

When out in the 'field' I've done exactly that myself on rare occasion I wanted more gauges detail. But more often than not its all post processing using the data view program to trace back over that is needed to filter the crap from valid info especially if you are going for a mapping change post run.
As stevie says, there is no way to look at this stuff in a car. Side note: Even D5 dash displays which I do my own bespoke layouts for, I class them as the most readable and logical out there, but its impossible in a car that does 100kmh to 200kmh in 4.5 seconds to focus IMHO so the feature that is of more use is an extensive and developed warning system that does overlays for the driver, and anything critical is managed by the ECU and the limp strategies (which are only as good as the bloke who set them up!).

TBH though having on a normal Dell laptop (E6430) I find it much easier on a full pull to have the monitor program open fully as per below.
right click and view full image (bottom left is laptop mon screen)

This achieves what you want to do above, simple and much better way, all maths are there as well.

Thanks again all!

on 2)Yes it turns out the Toggle Live Lock option was indeed what I was after - this seems to work fairly nicely - though as has been pointed out as soon as I'm out of the low load areas things start to happen really to quickly and the feature becomes less and less useful - it has been absolutely great for 'cruise' areas.

A proper repayable 'ghost trace' would hugely improve things in this (point 2 related) area - It does feel disappointing that is hasn't been implemented (yet?) - it would certainly help with the initial (coarse) fuel map - quick run, pull over, review /adjust / repeat. I'm absolutely sure using sView to properly analyse resultant data is a better approach - but I'm an absolute amateur - ultimately I'll be handing off to a professional for the final 'power tune'. That said I do plan to get myself up to speed with the logged data analysis side of things over the next few months.

On the sMon in conjunction with sCal front - that does indeed took like a better / workable solution than just using sCal alone - in fact I was just thinking earlier a better place for the gauges would be vertically rather than horizontally to maximise the space available for the fuel table - will give that a whirl!

For live tuning of the map and low load sites....

Simply live lock the trace, and watch the closed loop multiplier and make adjustments until it is as close to zero as you want. ie so it is hitting your target without too many corrections being applied etc.

Although obviously closed loop needs to be working fairly well too.

For power tuning though, the onboard logging is simply superb, and the speed/ease of access to pull and review a log is simply unmatched by anything else out there

Just have SCal, SView and SData all running at the same time, and you can do a pull save the log and review in a matter of seconds.

On almost any other ecu out there that would take much much longer, with many even forcing an engine stop to pull the log.

On the data viewing front.....one annoying bit is the right sidebar is so damn small.

It would be nice if the user could choose to remove some of the items on each window displayed and/or also increase the size. Even on a decent sized laptop screen...they're small.

-Right now I'm just starting the 'journey' of figuring out how to do just that - maybe this isn't stricktly a feature request but it'd be nice to see an in depth 'how to' guide on that specific topic as well as something more in depth published on maths channel functions and real world application examples.
