Is it a firmware thing? Or an actual hardware issue with the s6? I assumed because it was used in pnp kits that it would be possible, but assumptions get you no where haha

Marketing issue I imagine! S6 was an entry-level product, compared to the Life Racing F88 options available at the time.
Syvecs/Life Racing have not implemented the generic receive capability on the S6 (which is obsolete now anyway) - since it can run a full blown I/O expander it won't be a hardware/performance issue in my opinion.
