Error codes

Would it be possible to set an error code against each sensor so that if it fails you could set up an output to flash the error code?
That would make diagnosing without a laptop a lot easier. (I don't want to carry my laptop everywhere "just in case"!)
If it's not possible to assign an error code, would it be possible to assign an output just to turn on if a sensor fails? At least this would give an indication that "something" was wrong.
