Formula Ford EcoBoost 1.6T

Post by Grabla66 »

Hi all
Thought I'd start a basic project thread for what is going to be technically quite challenging.

I run a Formula Ford EcoBoost single seater which is managed by a Life F88GDi. It has approx 200BHP, and weighs 460Kg.

I have a Syvecs io expander, and intend to fit paddles, pneumatics, traction and launch, and a 300BHP Turbo, over the winter.

Hope you don't mind plenty of questions.

This is the car being raced at the Aintree Sprint in the lovely British weather in 2016.

This is a video of the 1.0 version of my car, as driven by Chris Harris.

I also run my own Blog, on which I also share as much information about modifications as I can. I used to own a Ford Fiesta Mk1, which was 2.0 Duratec on DTA with sequential gearbox, but I changed to the Mygale in 2015 and this is my first full season of sprinting and hillclimbing, which I've thoroughly enjoyed, but found a few shortcomings with the car, notably weight, power, gear selection and traction and launch. Not much then :D

I scored my first ever points in the British Sprint Championship in September, which I intend to enter again in 2017, with something more competitive.

At the moment, the car is being stripped down for the modifications to start. So far I have removed all of the bodywork, which now gives me access to the front of the engine, which is where the alternator is being relocated to. These cars run their alternators from the driveshaft, so this means I have to charge the battery between runs, relying on a 2.2Kw petrol generator providing power for a battery charger, which is a) noisey, and b) expensive to run all day at race meetings. The battery voltage has dropped as low as 11V whilst sitting in traffic, but as soon as the car moves forward under its own steam, the battery voltage jumps up to around 13.8V which is what you'd expect when the alternator is being driven.

With the alternator mounted in front of the engine, I'm going to use an additional pulley from the water pump, to turn the alternator.

Regarding the Syvecs IO module, should I place this as close as I can to the Life ECU to keep the CAN cable short, or does it not really matter where it sits?

I dont think the length of the CAN cable matters too much...within reason of course.

Can anyone tell me if the Life F88-GDi4 in my car is capable of running a cooling fan? And if so where do I set this up in the ecu?

Running it in what respect ?

You would not be able to connect a fan directly to the ecu, given the amount of current it would draw. But you can certainly have the ecu switch a fan off or on via a normal relay, or via a SSR or other suitable controller to PWM the fan for variable speed control.

Both would only require 1 spare output. I wouldnt think your engine would already be using all of them ?

And various software use videos. I'm sure yours is very similar.

Although not quite same topic, it may be helpful

Does anyone know if the x10 passes the CAN through to CAN#2?

I'm advised to run my dashboard off CAN #2 from the X10 rather than share CAN from the ecu with the X10

X10 is off CAN2 at higher than normal speed.
Do not run it with a 120 ohm resistor as it already has one (as I found out)

This is how I see the connectivity. So my Dashboard, and GPS Module, need to be on CAN #2, and the X10 stays on CAN #1 from the ECU.

You can only hook up the CAN01 on the X10 to the dedicated CAN02 from the F88 (nothing else goes on this line).
X10 <> chassis loom <> CAN02(F88) *the diagram you have above is using CAN02 from the X10 which is not right, its the CAN02 from the ECU you need*

On one car I run the D5 LR dash unit on the CAN01 line from the ECU, and GPS unit.
