Toyota MR2 Project

Post by Johnny G »

Well, after lurking around here, reading as much as I can to understand the unit, I thought I'd give some information about my MR2 project, which is nearing completion.

It's 1995 MR2 GTS, which has had the 3SGTE removed and replaced with a fully built 5VZ-FE (3.4ltr V6) - forged bottom end and fully built head. The engine was built by 5VZ-FE specialists in the US (Sea2Sky) and shipped over to Woodsport for installation, along with a nice GT4094R, TiAL wastegate, etc. The fuel system is running dual Walbros and 1000cc injectors; the car has had ABS hubs retrofitted for installation of the traction control feature in the Solaris.

Power goal is around 700bhp, but anything over 600bhp will be nice, as I've sized the turbo for spool and usability, rather than the 1/4 mile smile.

Initially, I had planned to use an AEM, but Ryan talked me into the Solaris, which he is making the harness for on the 14th Oct 09 and then installing for the cars first start on 15th Oct 09. I won't be using half of the features of the Solaris unit, but I will be having the Boost Control, Traction, Launch, Knock, etc. There's a WI system to go on, eventually, but I just want it running smoothly first.

I've got an AEM basemap CAL file here, will be of any use to get it running with the Solaris?

I'll update with the results, and I'm sure Ryan will pop in and comment too.

Oh, I've also ordered another Solaris S6PNP to on my VVTi Supra...
Cheers.
Cheers,
Johnny

Well, Ryan came to Woodsport on Weds 14th and 15th to make up the harness and put the basemap on.

After some playing, we got it running and idling. The Solaris does a great job of throttling down the 1000cc injectors to allow a 900-1000rpm idle, very smooth. It's now running very nicely with a soft-limit of 4000rpm, just to bed the engine in on the normal, mineral oil. There's some more work to do on the car to get it 100% road worthy before we can get it on the rollers, but it's getting there.

Top job by Ryan, top kit by Solaris and absolutely superb preparation by Paul Woods of Woodsport.

Watch this space!

Johnny

Just thought I'd post up that Ryan's now mapped this, running off the wastegate, to 7000rpm. Results were 410bhp and 420lb/ft @ 0.7bar.

There was a limitation on the crank ventilation, so we're addressing that with some nice -12AN breathers on each cam cover, going to a custom made aluminium baffled and vented breather tank. The existing PCV hoses will be replaced by some K&N mini breathers. This increases the crank ventilation by around 370% from stock and will prevent the blow-by that we experienced at RS Tuning.

One thing that Ryan did do, though, was refine the map that was on there from the Road Mapping session, and it's just a different car again to drive. So smooth and relatively economical for a 3.4 litre turbo!

The Knock-control is now enabled and the traction control is wired in as well.

More updates to come when the work is done :)
Cheers,
Johnny
